Stunning Sherlock
I have begun to watch the newest revamp of Sherlock Holmes on the BBC and it is amazing! It certainly breaks the mold of most previous adaptations of the series. Each episode is 1.5 hours long and really allows the viewer time digest the story and make their own assumptions, which is certainly a departure from other Holmes pieces. What I really love is the cinematography. It is absolutely beautiful, but in such a subtle way. The coloring is perfect. The exposition shots are exquisite. The framing is simple and very symmetric. The transitions are straightforward and aren’t distracting. They play with depth of field a lot, which I love. It’s all visually clean and perfect.
They also did a great thing by bringing it into the present. The dialogue is sharp and very witty. The acting is top notch. There are just too many good things to say about the series that I can barely organize my thoughts on it! If you get a chance, watch an episode. You won’t regret it if you like to think about what you’re watching.
